Configuration Settings document - MIME - Conversion Options - Inbound tab
Use the MIME - Conversion Options - Inbound tab to set options that control how Domino converts messages received in MIME format over SMTP to Notes rich text format. Conversion to Notes rich text format is necessary when the storage preference for the recipient's mail file is set to Notes rich text format, or when the next server on the route to the destination mail file is running a Domino release earlier than Release 5.

Use character set auto-detection if message has no character set informationChoose one of the following:
  • Yes - If the character set used in an inbound message is not specified by MIME headers in the message, Domino examines the message text to determine the character set. Select this option if your site routinely receives non-MIME messages that are encoded in character sets other than ASCII. Although this option provides the most accurate rendering of the original character information, it slows performance.
  • No - (default) Character set auto-detection is disabled.
Note If incoming mail contains corrupted characters, even after you enable automatic character set detection, consider setting up inbound character set name aliases, particularly if you determine that the problem messages originate from certain sources only. Some mail services provide incorrect character set information in their outbound mail, for example, labeling a message with Chinese characters as US-ASCII. In this case, you could set up an alias that maps US-ASCII to the Simplified Chinese character set (GB2312). When Domino receives messages labeled as US-ASCII, it treats them as Simplified Chinese. Because the US-ASCII character set is a subset of the Simplified Chinese characters set, Domino continues to render messages containing US-ASCII characters only correctly.
