MAIL AND ADDRESS BOOK

Specifying the computers where archiving runs and where the archive is stored
The Basics page of the Archive Settings dialog box shows where the archive database for the current database is stored, options for the type of archiving (client-based or server-based), and status on the last archive performed, if there was one.

If the Archive Settings dialog box is not open, choose File - Database - Properties, click "Archive Settings," and then click Basics.

For any database (except mail if a policy prohibits it), you can specify whether archiving is performed by your own Notes client software on your computer (client-based archiving) or by a Domino server (server-based archiving). In server-based archiving, the original database must be stored on the server where archiving runs. In client-based archiving, the original database can be stored either on the client or on a server.

You can also specify the destination computer (local or server) where the archive database will be stored. In both client- and server-based archiving, the computer where archiving runs can be different from the computer that stores the archive database.

If you are archiving your mail and these options are not available, your administrator has specified a policy for archiving mail databases that prohibits you from choosing between client-based and server-based archiving.

For more information, see Administration policies for archiving mail.

In client-based archiving, you can specify the schedule for archiving to correspond to the most convenient time each day for you to leave your computer running. For mail databases, your administrator may set a policy that controls the schedule.

When archiving runs on the Domino server, you can turn your computer off at any time without interfering with archiving.

To specify a performance and destination computer:

1. To select the computer that performs archiving, do one of the following:

2. Do one of the following to specify the destination computer where the archive database(s) will be created. If you select a server, you must have access to create a database on the destination server.
3. Click OK.

4. Now you are ready to create or edit a set of archive criteria.

Access to archiving for mail

If the Edit button is dim, and you see a lock next to your criteria, your organization's Domino administrator has set an archive policy for mail databases. If the policy is set to client-based archiving, you may need to leave your computer on at the time of day when archiving is scheduled to occur, or change the time on the Advanced page of the Archive Settings dialog box. When a server performs archiving, the server controls the time archiving occurs (once a day at 1:00 a.m.). When your Notes client software performs archiving, your local computer must be on at the time specified in the schedule.

For more information, see Specifying a schedule for client-based archiving.

Archiving status information

The Basics page also shows archiving status information from the last time archiving ran.

Note Numbers of documents processed shown in this area may not correspond exactly to the number of documents you selected for archiving. As with replication, archiving is efficient and may find ways to avoid processing every document in a selection or database.
